Prof. Kaplan is the head of Department for laser and photodynamic therapy which consists of scientific-research and clinical sections.

Prof. Kaplan has worked with lasers and laser research since 1985. He researched and developed new laser and photodynamic treatment methods for various serious metabolic and immunological diseases such as cancer, ischemic heart disease, diabetes, athreosclerosis and purulent wound healing.

Photodynamic therapy together with radiation therapy is used for the therapy of skin and mucous membranes cancer, metastases of breast and other cancers into skin, Kaposi's Sarcoma, Carcinoma of the vulva, lung cancer, cancer of eousophagous and stomack.

In the clinical department treatments are available for patients with cardio-vascular diseases (ischemic heart disease, hypertension, atherosclerosis of vessels lower limbs), diabetes, chronic respiratory diseases (chronic bronchitis, pneumonia), diseases of kidneys (pyelonephritis) and others disorders.

The main treatment methods are:

  • Low level infrared laser therapy and intravenous blood irradiation in the treatment of different somatic disorders
  • Photodynamic therapy in the treatment of cancer patients.
  • Electromagnetic impulse therapy
  • Autological stem-cell therapy

The research department focuses on the development of more effective diagnostic and treatment methods.

Scientific research includes approbation and evaluation of new photosesitizers, study of their pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, determination of optimal therapy doses and evaluation of appropriate doses for laser irradiation. The laboratory has been testing and working with several porphyrin and chlorine based photosensitizers ( photofrin II, phtalocyanine , fotolon, chlorine e6 ), as well as is currently testing a new photosensitizer Indocyanin green.

I, II and III phase studies are performed for different photosensitizers and laser therapy equipment for photodynamic therapy.

Several types of animal cancer lines (rat sarcoma M1, Walker sarcoma, sarcoma 45 , Lymphosarcoma, Erlich mouse sarcoma, melanoma B16 and other) are under research for photodynamic therapy in the institute. In addition the laboratory performs hystomorphologic examination and evaluation of specimens of patient cancer cells.
