Anu Mäkelä began her studies at the Australian National University (Canberra, Australia) and transferred to Alma Ata where she graduated with honors in the field of psychiatry and psychology from the Faculty of medical and healthcare sciences department of in 1984. Anu Mäkelä has been working with patients since graduation, but she is not a legalized medical doctor in Finlnad.

Currently she is the dean of Acupuncture and Bioenergy Research Institute (Helsinki, Finland). Anu Mäkelä is the President of European medical Laser Association (EMLA). She is also a member of Russian Laser Academy of Sciences.

Anu Mäkelä has doctorate degrees in medicine (electrophysiology), biochemistry, nutrition, traditional Chinese medicine, including acupuncture and traditional herbal medicine.

She has been teaching on a regular basis medical students, physiotherapists, and other healthcare professionals since 1988. She has also held lectures and presentations in numerous international congresses.

She started to work with low level lasers even before graduation, in 1982. Her knowledge in acupuncture and electrophysiology helped in the development of the first in the world He-Ne based electro-laser acupuncture system, which was ready in 1983. It was later named as "He-Ne-Laser Punctueur" and produced in Germany. Anu Mäkelä also participated in the further development of that system by EMRED Oy (Helsinki , Finland) known under name ELAPS (Electro-Laser Acupuncture System).

She also developed electro-laser therapy method, which is based on electrophysiological evaluation of the condition of acupuncture points and simultaneous influence of laser light and electricity on acupuncture points. This method is widely used in Finland and known as MSF-kuntoutus.

Anu Mäkelä is a well-known specialist in the area of nutrition and food supplements. Book Pharmaka Mäkelä (in Finnish) was sold in more than 10000 copies. She has developed by request several health food products, which are currently produced and available in Finland.
